FIBERS Fibers, in particular of the soluble kind, are well known to lower LDL cholesterol. The American Heart Association therefore advises to include 25 - 30 grams of fiber daily in the diet. BiosLife™ Complete contains 2.7 grams of soluble fiber with 0.3 grams of insoluble fiber and vitamins and minerals, such as chromium. Upon consumption of three packets a day, the fiber amount fills the gap between actual dietary consumption of fiber and the advice of the American Heart Association. |

POLICOSANOL This sugar cane extract is a poly-alcohol that has been shown to lower cholesterol through inhibition of HMG CoA reductase. Several studies have shown that dosages of 5 to 40 mg of this extract daily lowers LDL cholesterol in the range of 20 to 30% over periods of 8 to 24 weeks. |

PHYTOSTEROLS These phytonutrients have similar structures to cholesterol and therefore competitively inhibit the absorption of cholesterol from the diet. Studies show typical lowering of LDL cholesterol with phytosterols are 5 to 15% over 4 week periods. |

CHRYSANTHEMUM MORIFOLIUM These flowers extract has been linked by internal research to enhancement of cholesterol metabolism. The plant has been used for centuries in the Chinese culture as a tea.

Detailed explanation of the functions of the various ingredients:
Vitamin AVitamin A (retinol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that is known for its importance in vision and bone growth. However, it is also vital in the immune system as well as in the production of red blood cells.
Vitamin CVitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, making it a valuable defense against heart disease. However, ascorbyl palmitate is a fat-soluble source of vitamin C. This unique mixture of fat-soluble and water-soluble makes the vitamin C more accessible to all parts of the body. Vitamin C is widely known to be vitally important to good health. However, the body does not produce its own stores of vitamin C so it must be obtained through diet.
Vitamin C is particularly important in Cellular Essentials® because it is recognized in its ability to slow down atherosclerosis, and to prevent problems such as blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. Vitamin C also lowers cholesterol. These functions of Vitamin C have been demonstrated in numerous studies.
One study showed that antioxidant therapy with Vitamins C and E helped vascular endothelium (the lining of blood vessels) recover from damage caused by excess fats in the blood. Damage to the endothelium is associated with atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, so maintaining a healthy endothelium is important in the prevention and treatment of those diseases.
Another study tested 520 subjects in their response to non-treatment, or treatment with vitamins C and E. The results showed that the atherosclerosis in people with high cholesterol, particularly men, was reduced with the administration of vitamins C and E.
A study by Carr, Zhu, and Frei in 2000 showed that vitamin C is more effective in these antioxidant treatments and that vitamin E appears to mildly supplement the effectiveness of vitamin C. The same study looked into the mechanism by which vitamin C retards atherosclerosis. The findings indicated that vitamin C inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the cholesterol that, when oxidized is deposited into the endothelium of blood vessels leading to potential problems such as atherosclerosis) while preventing white blood cells from binding to the endothelium and reducing the overall dysfunction of the vascular endothelium. All of these mechanisms prevent the progress of atherosclerosis because they promote the health of the vascular endothelium while preventing buildup and blockage of the arteries from starting.
Vitamin DVitamin D is an important substance in the body because it helps to maintain normal amounts of calcium in the bloodstream by allowing its absorption into the bones. This is particularly important in heart health because any chronic or exaggerated imbalance in the content of the blood can have a negative effect on vascular health.
Vitamin EVitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant that also prevents the oxidation of LDL particles, thus lowering LDL cholesterol levels and preventing or slowing down atherosclerosis.
ThiaminThiamin (vitamin B1) is a B-vitamin that is an important component that helps convert carbohydrates and fats into energy. In this role, it is vital to allow the heart to function properly, as the heart requires large amounts of energy to perform its never-ending task of pumping blood continuously throughout the body.
RiboflavinRiboflavin (vitamin B2) is another B-vitamin with a similar function to that of thiamin in that it helps convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy. In addition, riboflavin is important in red blood cell production and immune function.
NiacinNiacin (Vitamin B3) is a water-soluble B-vitamin that is a precursor to some of the coenzymes that are vital to the electron transport chain of metabolism. The electron transport chain is the ending part of metabolism where the majority of the energy, in the form of ATP, is produced. In addition to its important role in energy metabolism, niacin is a well-recognized treatment for lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol. This double effect is significant as either high LDL cholesterol levels or low HDL cholesterol levels can cause cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis. As a result, niacin is often given in conjunction with statin drugs. Statin drugs are effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, but either lower HDL cholesterol levels or leave it unaffected.
Vitamin B6Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is like the other B vitamins in that it is important in energy production. However, it also aids in balancing sodium and potassium levels and promotes red blood cell production making it important in nervous system health as well as cardiovascular health.
Folic AcidFolic acid (vitamin B9) is a vital part of new cell synthesis. This is why folic acid is especially important for pregnant women to have as the rapid cell division of the growing fetus necessitates folic acid. However, folic acid is not only important to pregnant women as it is necessary for normal synthesis of red blood cells. All adults need at least 400 mcg a day to avoid becoming anemic (Recommended Dietary Allowance).
Vitamin B12Vitamin B12 - complex B vitamin also important in energy production. However, it is particularly important in cell synthesis and growth as well as red blood cell production. Vitamin B12 also allows folic acid to function properly, so vitamin B12 deficiency is closely tied to folic acid deficiency as well.
BiotinBiotin (vitamin B7) - important for fatty acid synthesis in that it catalyzes certain metabolic reactions to make the synthesis proceed more quickly. It also helps to maintain a constant blood-sugar level, which is important for diabetics and also for cardiovascular health.
Pantothenic AcidPantothenic acid (vitamin B5) - necessary in the production of coenzyme-A, which is a vital player in metabolism.
CalciumCalcium - useful in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly useful because it is selective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels.
PhosphorusPhosphorus - critical component of membrane walls, which are important to the integrity of all cells.
MagnesiumMagnesium - cofactor in many biological processes including those that are important to heart health.
ZincZinc - cofactor for antioxidant enzymes
SeleniumSelenium - cofactor for antioxidant enzymes
CopperCopper - energy production, particularly the active heart muscle.
ManganeseManganese - important cofactor for many enzymes, some are antioxidant, aid cardiovascular health.
ChromiumChromium - nutrient that increases insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.
Chromium is BiosLife is in the form of chromium polinicotinate (ChromeMate). - excellent absorption capabilities.
